Identity & belonging

Make room for interests, strengths, and ways of being.

Explore the concept

Belonging is shaped by a group’s responses to difference. The stories invite attention to what learners show or hide and how they discover a place to contribute. Avoid turning a strength or difficulty into a permanent identity. Offer a choice about sharing and let children explore belonging through a character if they prefer.

A practice to try

Ask which group action helped or hindered a character’s belonging.
